Sandals ends partnership with Apple Vacations

By Jerry Limone

Unique Vacations, representative of the Sandals and Beaches brands, has terminated its wholesaler agreement with Apple Vacations.

"The move is part of an overall strategy to partner with fewer companies that give priority to Unique Vacations, providing ample opportunity and venues to distinguish the brands under its banner, particularly Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts, in a crowded marketplace," said Unique Vacations.

"Investing in the traditional distribution system, from inventive marketing to meaningful education, is paramount to the success of Unique Vacations, and the company will continue to grow this sector and to richly reward wholesalers, tour operators and agents who share its goals."

Tim Mullen, Apple Vacations' senior vice president, said in a statement, "On July 20, Apple Vacations was notified by Sandals/Beaches Resorts without reason that we would no longer be able to sell their properties.

"Apple Vacations continues to increase production to Jamaica each year. Specifically, Apple has increased its 2010 production by 34% over 2009 and advanced sales are up more than 20% for 2011. So this decision by Sandals surprises us.

"The quality of the products in Jamaica has improved tremendously in the last couple years and demand for the destination continues to grow. Apple is encouraged by the growth of its Jamaica business and the travel agent support we continue to receive for this unique island."

Apple Vacations, one of the largest tour operators in the U.S., offers packages to Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Europe, Costa Rica and ski destinations in the Rockies.
