Carlson Wagonlit and United end standoff

October 03, 2008

Carlson Wagonlit Travel and United Airlines have come to terms on a preferred-supplier agreement.

Carlson Wagonlit was among the travel agencies affected when United pulled the plug on some deals in June as part of its effort to cut more than $100 million in commission costs out of its budget.

A CWT statement, distributed on behalf of both the agency and airline, said that “coming to this agreement is in the best interest of CWT, United and the two organizations’ mutual clients.” The companies reached the agreement effective Sept. 29.

CWT spokeswoman Shannon Coughlin said no further comments or details would be released.

United canceled its domestic agreement with CWT effective June 30, and after immediate efforts to fashion a new agreement failed, CWT canceled their international agreement effective July 31, according statements made by Carlson Wagonlit CEO Douglas Anderson in mid-September.

At that time, Anderson said the agency had shifted a “substantial” amount of traffic to other carriers.
