Kansas City voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a
proposal to develop a $1 billion airport terminal.
The measure passed with 77.4% of the vote.
The city plans to demolish the existing three terminals at
Kansas City's airport and replace it with a single terminal. Opening is slated for 2021. The move
would enable more consolidated operations and larger gate areas. Plans also
call for more modern shops and amenities.
Tuesday's ballot measure stated that all costs for the
project will come from airport operations and the operation of "related
facilities."
The vote ends years of contentious debate over the planned
terminal. Some locals have an affinity for the existing airport, which offers
short walks from the parking garage to the terminals, and then from security to
gates.
Kansas City has selected the firm Edgemoor Infrastructure
& Real Estate to design and develop the airport.
