Italy is this year’s top spot for honeymooners, according to Modern Bride’s 12th annual survey of the World’s 50 Best Honeymoons.
The selections derived from a panel of Virtuoso travel specialists and were published in the August/September issue of the magazine.
No. 1 Italy, “a sensualist’s playground” according to the magazine, is right for “romantics with a culture streak and a willingness to shrug off euro sticker shock.”
Modern Bride recommends staying at the Bauer II Palazzo in Venice; the St. Regis Grand Hotel, Rome; Villa San Michele in the Fiesole hills above Florence; Hotel Santa Caterina outside Amalfi; and Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio on Lake Como.
The following round out the top 5:
Hawaii: There’s no euro sticker shock here for U.S. mainlanders. Plus, Hawaii hotels are luring visitors this summer with discounts for the first time in many years. Where to stay? The magazine recommends the newly refurbished Ritz Carlton, Kapalua on Maui; two Four Seasons resorts on Lanai, the Lodge at Koele and Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay; and the Halekulani on Oahu.
Tahiti: Like luxury? Then you’ll like the five-star resorts on Bora Bora, Moorea and Tahaa.
Modern Bride’s suggested stays: the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa; the St. Regis Resort, Bora Bora; and the Sofitel Moorea Beach Resort.
Mexico: Location, location, location. Mexico’s top locales, including Cancun, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, are a short flight from many U.S. cities.
The magazine’s recommended stays: One&Only Palmilla in Los Cabos; Maroma Resort and Spa on the Riviera Maya; and the Tides Zihuatanejo, formerly Hotel Villa del Sol, in Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo.
Greece: Modern Bride cautions honeymooners on the Greek isles to “bring your sunscreen and your appetite, but brace yourselves for the exchange rate.” The islands of Crete, Mykonos and Santorini are open for tourists from mid-April to mid-October.
Recommended stays: Elounda Beach Hotel on Crete; Katikies Hotel on Santorini; and Kivotos Clubhotel Deluxe on the Bay of Ornos, minutes from Mykonos Town.
