Most U.S. domestic
travel is made up of short trips, according to a recent Travel
Industry Association (TIA) Travelscope Study.
More than half
(58%) of all trips, defined as a journey of 50 miles or more from
home, are shorter than three nights, the study reports. And nearly
a quarter of all trips (24%) involve no overnight stay at
all.
Indeed, very few
domestic trips taken (13%) require a block of seven nights or
longer.
Most domestic
travelers stay in hotels, motels or bed-and-breakfasts (55%), while
39% stay at private homes, presumably with friends or
family.
Five percent of all
domestic trips include an RV or tent as part of the
lodging.
While it may not be
a shock to learn that a third of domestic leisure trips (32%) are
made up of adults and children, it may be of interest to note that
one in 10 of all domestic business trips involves adults with
children.
