Montserrat's Soufriere Hills volcano hurled rocks and lava toward the abandoned capital of Plymouth and spewed ash 10,000 feet into the air on Dec. 26, according to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory.

No ash fell over inhabited areas. The volcano had been quiet for six months until it exploded in early December, but caused no damage, injuries or fatalities.

Soufriere Hills became active in 1995 and killed 19 people when it erupted two years later.
