PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic -- Punta Cana will become the next
Cancun, at least according to Ricardo Hazoury, president of Grupo
del Caribe.
The company launched Cap Cana, a "multibillion-dollar tourism
project" near Punta Cana on Nov. 20.
Grupo del Caribe will enhance a 30,000-acre parcel of beachfront
land into a "year-round tourist destination," according to a
spokeswoman.
Nicklaus Design, the design group headed by golfer Jack
Nicklaus, is contracted to develop three golf courses for the
resort area. They will be the first Nicklaus-designed courses in
the Dominican Republic.
In addition, Cap Cana will boast a large marina, several private
residences, and two dozen, luxury hotels, the spokeswoman said.
Grupo del Caribe currently manages the country's major airports
and more than 5,000 hotel rooms on the island.
