CAIRO -- An explosion
April 7 at a Cairo shopping bazaar popular with tourists killed a
French tourist and another unidentified woman an injured several
other people, including one American.
Initial reports
suggested the blast on al-Moski Street, near the Al-Azhar Mosque
and Khan Al-Khalili bazaar, was caused by a bomb thrown by a man on
a passing motorcycle.
The Associated Press
reported a large organized tour group was shopping on the street at
the time of the explosion.
Islamic militants
have attacked Egyptian tourist attractions as recently as last
year, when several Sinai Peninsula hotels popular with Israeli
visitors, including one in the northern village of Taba, were
bombed, killing dozens.
In 1997, Egypt's
tourism industry was rocked when terrorists gunned down 10 tourists
in Cairo and then 58 foreigners and four Egyptians at the ancient
temple complex at Luxor.
