LUCAYA -- For golfers looking for more experience, Our Lucaya is
the place to go.
The 1,350-room resort on Grand Bahama Island opened the Butch
Harmon School of Golf at the resort's Lucayan Course in
January.
The school caters to Tiger Woods wanna-bes by teaching them some
moves and techniques to improve their game.
The program is not designed for beginner golfers, but rather for
those with at least a moderate level of experience, according to
Wayne Johnson, resident golf pro in charge of the school.
Golfers with dreams of turning pro are separated into groups of
six students per three teachers and spend the day following an
intense course of instruction.
Sessions focus on the short and long games. Students also work
on their swings with the aid of a before-and-after video
comparison.
After the instruction sessions, students are taken to the course
for a round of golf.
Practice facilities also include a putting green and practice
tees.
Students can choose to attend one-day or three-day plans,
including two- or four-nights accommodations. Half-day "signature
school" plans also are offered on 10 dates throughout the year.
The three-day plan is priced at $2,600 per room, single, or
$4,800 per room, double, for two golfers ($2,630 per room for a
golfer and a non-golfer).
The cost covers four nights' accommodations in Breakers Cay,
transfers to the course and three days of instruction with
lunch.
The one-day plan is priced at $1,250 per person, double, and
features two nights' accommodations as well as transfers, and one
day of instruction, including lunch, with the golf pros.
Signature School plans offer a less expensive, less in-depth
course with a three-hour morning clinic, lunch and golf.
Signature School is priced at $299 per person with
accommodations not included.
Butch Harmon, a former pro golfer best known as Woods' coach,
also operates a school in Las Vegas.
