BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- Laying claim to being the first luxury
rail tour in the Caribbean, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway National
Tour welcomes its first passengers on Oct. 10.
The three-hour, 30-mile program will use the same railway built
in 1912 to deliver sugar cane from the 18th century plantation
fields to the sugar mill in the capital Basseterre.
Sites along the route include sugar estates, the ruins of slave
barracks, the Brimstone Hill Fortress built in 1690, Old Road Town
where Thomas Jefferson's great grandfather is buried and the
island's rainforest.
Two trips will be made daily, one departing at 8:20 a.m. and a
second at 1:10 p.m. Each adult ticket is $89.50 while children's
fares are $44.75. Rates cover a seat in the lower cabin and the
upper observation deck, refreshments, musical entertainment and a
narrated tour of the island.
Meanwhile, cruise passengers aren't left out and may purchase
tickets on board most ships. Roundtrip shuttle service to the train
station will be provided.
