WASHINGTON -- As the high tourist season approaches, the State
Department issued a "worldwide caution public announcement,"
reminding U.S. citizens to "remain vigilant with regard to their
personal safety."
The department said it was not responding to a particular threat
but wants "to emphasize our ongoing concern for the security of
Americans overseas. Should the department receive information about
a specific and credible threat, the information will be shared with
all potentially affected."
The department also reminded travelers that terrorists may take
action against U.S. citizens and interests on significant dates,
such as the Aug. 7 anniversary of the bombings of the U.S.
embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
U.S. citizens abroad should regularly monitor the department's
consular information Web site at travel.state.gov for up-to-date information on
security conditions, it said.
