Stratosphere opens third of its extreme-thrill rides

LAS VEGAS -- Early this fall, the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower will open another way to get a fantastic view of the Strip, but it won't be for the fainthearted.

The property partnered with Interactive Rides of Logan, Utah, to create an extreme-thrill ride.

With the working title of Project XSky, the ride is designed to send riders over the edge of the Stratosphere Tower's observation deck, which rises nearly 900 feet above the Strip.

The ride consists of an open, floorless vehicle that can hold up to eight passengers in "escape-proof" seats. The vehicle is attached to a pivoting track that propels it at about 30 mph, enabling riders to experience free-fall maneuvers while the vehicle races back and forth.

Project XSky will be the third of the Stratosphere's thrill rides, and the world's third-highest of these rides, according to the property, behind its Big Shot and High Roller roller coaster.
