STAMFORD, Conn. -- Two states received the 2000 Destiny Award (in
separate categories) from the Natonal Council of Destination
Organizations during the annual Educational Seminar for Tourism
Organizations event held here.
The award in the marketing promotions category went to
Virginia's Newport News Tourism Development Office for its 100
Miles of Lights campaign.
The regional project was a cooperative holiday promotion
including the cities of Newport News, Williamsburg, Richmond,
Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and the Virginia
Tourism Corp.
In the special projects category, the Muskogee (Okla.)
Convention and Tourism Bureau was lauded for its Historic Black
Town Project, which targeted travelers with an interest in western
heritage.
The Metropolitan Nashville (Tenn.) Airport Authority was awarded
a Judges' Special Award for marketing programs, citing its Arts in
the Airport program, which began in 1988.
Under the program, the airport sponsors exhibits by national,
regional and local artists, and live musical performances in a
variety of genres by local musicians and performing groups, all
designed to showcase the culture and talent of the middle Tennessee
region.
The National Council of Destination Organizations is an industry
council of the Travel Industry Association of America.
