U.S. issues Africa advisory

WASHINGTON -- The State Department advised U.S. travelers in six African countries that it has received reports of possible terrorist attacks along the route of the Dakar, Senegal-Cairo Road Rally.

"We take this information seriously," the department said in a public announcement.

The rally passes through Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Libya and Egypt, ending in Cairo on Jan. 24.

The department urged U.S. citizens in the region "to remain vigilant" of their personal security and "exercise caution."
