Travelers in France should expect reduced public transportation service and increased road closures this week due to student protests that have turned violent.
Demonstrations are happening across the country -- more than 250,000 protestors took to the streets on Tuesday, according to the French Interior Ministry.
An alert from the U.S. Embassy and Consulates on Oct. 5 cautions Americans to avoid demonstration areas, anticipate travel delays and continue to monitor local media for updates. As of Wednesday, classes have been disrupted at more than 500 high schools, according to France24.
The State Department's travel advisory for France remains at Level 2 -- exercise increased caution.
Student protests are said to be about teacher shortages, overcrowded classes and declining facilities. On Wednesday, a protest on Boulevard Saint-Germain, in the middle of Paris, turned violent as demonstrators clashed with police.
Since the protests began in late September, more than 6,000 arrests have been made and more than 700 law enforcement officers and gendarmes have been injured, according to the Interior Ministry.
