Description
Charming Hotel, a 19th-century Provencal House expanded & embellished in the 1920s, now sporting a fanciful villa-like exterior.
Location and History
Well off the street behind a modest gated entrance, one kilometer south of the city center within easy walking distance to the Place Forum des Cardeurs, across from Paul Cezanne University, this enchanting Provencal hotel is perhaps the most successful purveyor of Aix's esprit de corp.
The gated entry keeps the world at bay, and generations of the Swellen family have entertained guests here for a century. The grandfather inaugurated this lovely hostelry back in 1924, and one of his earliest guests, a certain Monsieur Cezanne, was so impressed with the spot that he painted Mont Ste-Victoire from a vantage point in the hotel's lush, sycamore-dotted garden, which remains tended to perfection by a team of experienced horticulturalists.
