Location and History
At the foot of Table Mountain, near the best nightlife areas around Kloof and Long streets, and across from the Company's Garden, this magnificent bright pink hotel is considered a historical icon in Cape Town and oozes refined elegance.
Named after British naval hero Lord Horatio Nelson, the "Nellie" or "the Pink Lady," as it's affectionately called by locals, first opened her doors in 1899. Guests would arrive in Cape Town on the ships of the Union-Castle shipping line, and both the shipping company and the hotel were owned by Sir Donald Currie—he wanted to create a hotel as elegant and sophisticated as the finest in London.
