Description
Historic hotel with old world charm; Overlooking Marion Square on Charleston's historic peninsula.
Location and History
Opposite Marion Square, the former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building is a stalwart modernist movement. It was commissioned by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and served as a sprawling federal office building until suffering significant damage by Hurricane Floyd in 1999. The building lay fallow for years. The battle to get it back and running was something of a tabloid affair, and the gossip never seems to stop. Developer John Dewberry, hence its name, and his renovation team ultimately saved the day, bringing the building back to life as an upscale hotel in 2016.
