Viale Certosa 68, Matera, Italy 20155
Location and History
Matera, located in Italy's Basilicata region, is the third oldest inhabited city in the world, and was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. The city is uniquely built into its own sassi, or caves. The caves were once home to the locals of Matera, where families upward of 20 people would live in the confined spaces.
This history can provide a conflicting contrast to what Matera is today. In the 1980s, the Italian government invested in restoring the city, which has now become a tourist hotspot due to the natural beauty of the tufo (as the caves are called locally) of Matera.
