Location and History
Between Bourke and Little Collins streets, this hotel is in a classic 1883 sandstone construction one block from Parliament House and Treasury Gardens. A splendid old-world offering, this is Melbourne's most poignant reminder of its days as a glamorous colonial city. It is said that this is the last grande dame, 19th-century hotel in Australia although its service standards have continued to fall dramatically over the years.
The Victorian atmosphere and its twin cupola towers do lots to bring attention, but the lovely facade can subside for those with higher, more modern expectations.
