In the historic district, close to ferries, restaurants and shops, this year-round favorite is an island classic stocked with claw-footed furniture and ubiquitous amber-tinted oil paintings of sailing ships. Among the past guests to stay here include Moby Dick author Henry Melville and former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant.
It is an old-fashioned amalgam that combines five historic homes under the Jared Coffin name. It is sibling to the more refined White Elephant with many reciprocal privileges available for guests.
