Description
Retro-style resort with bold design nestled against the San Jacinto Mountains, near Moorten Botanical Garden
Location and History
Located 4 miles southeast of the center of town, in a private compound, this place has a long and unusual history as a hotel. It started out as the first Holiday Inn in California before it became Gene Autry's Ocotillo Lodge, a colorful cowboy concoction aimed at Lone Ranger wannabes. A decade or so later, under the direction of Givenchy, it became a destination spa; Wheel of Fortune creator Merv Griffin later got hold of it and turned it into a Robin-Leach-narrated satire on jet-set living and Hollywood hospitality.
