Located in the heart of Portland's business and financial district, this remarkable 13-story property has been a landmark since it opened its doors in 1913. The brainchild of timber baron Simon Benson, the hotel cost $1 million to build, a considerable sum for the time.
Benson, who wanted to build the finest hotel west of the Mississippi, insisted on only the finest materials, so marble from Italy, Austrian crystal chandeliers and wood from the forests of Russia were imported.
