The 1929 building was built as the headquarters of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and its architecture was the design inspiration for New York City's Empire State Building. (Every year, the staff of the Empire State Building sends a Father's Day card to the staff of the Reynolds Building to commemorate the relationship.
