Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), Mexico’s largest airport operator, has purchased 321 acres along Huatulco Bay from Fonatur, Mexico’s National Tourism Fund, for $21 million.
ASUR, which operates Cancun Airport and eight other airports in the southeast of Mexico, including Huatulco Airport, won the right to purchase the land in a public bidding process created by Mexican government to promote the development of Huatulco as a major tourism destination.
As part of the purchase agreement, ASUR must develop and implement a plan to construct at least 1,300 hotel rooms on the land within the next four years. ASUR said it would conduct a study on how to best develop the land.
