Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, the Spanish hotel company that suddenly shut down the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar and the Iberostar Paraiso Beach hotels on the Riviera Maya on Aug. 28, is planning to reopen them Sept. 30.

The company said it closed the properties to "perform scheduled upgrades and preventive maintenance."

Guests booked for stays or who were staying at the hotels were moved to five other nearby Iberostar properties on the Riviera Maya and were given a free room upgrade.

"We are excited that we will be reopening as of Sept. 30, and sales [at the reopened hotels] are strong," said John Long, Iberostar vice president of sales and marketing.
