A baby turtle named Ixchel was the first to hatch from the Turtle Camp at the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun this year.
From August through November guests can see the endangered creatures on a stretch of the hotel's white-sand beach, which becomes a shelter where the turtles arrive at night to nest.
In order to support them, the resort has created a Turtle Camp, an ecological conservation program.
Ixchel is named in honor of the Moon Goddess who looks after voyagers, according to Mayan mythology. During their stay visitors can release baby turtles, assisted by the hotel's volunteers or kanan'ak, meaning turtle guardian in the Mayan language.
The kanan'ak, who are certified by the Cancun's Department of Ecology, offer brief talks about the turtles.
