The Malaysia-based Genting Group cleared a major hurdle in its bid to build a $4 billion Asian-themed resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
The Las Vegas Sun reported that the project “crossed a major regulatory hurdle,” with the Nevada Gaming Control Board recommending a gaming license for Genting Berhad, the investment arm of Genting Group.
Further approval is needed from the Nevada Gaming Commission.
Genting hopes to break ground on Resorts World Las Vegas this year. The project is to be built at the site of the halted Echelon project, which Genting purchased from Boyd Gaming for $350 million in 2013.
The megaresort would be built diagonally across from Wynn Resorts' Wynn and Encore hotels; the first phase is slated to open in 2016 with 3,500 hotel rooms and 175,000 square feet of gaming space.
