PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- Avis Rent A Car Systems is testing its Avis
Satellite Guidance System on 3,000 full-size vehicles in Florida,
California and Nevada.
For rent for an additional $7.95 per day through travel agents
or Avis' toll-free reservations number, the technology -- which
uses Global Positioning Satellite and Vehicle Speed Sensor systems
--provides driving directions in English and Spanish. Drivers can
also choose voice or text.
The system also provides alternate route calculation and 1.5
million points of interest, ranging from tourist destinations to
ATM machine locations and restaurants.
The VSS technology enables the vehicle's location to be fixed
even if the GPS signal can't be picked up.
