UTRECHT, Netherlands -- European railway consortium and railpass
purveyor Eurail Group here accepted Romania's national rail system
into its Selectpass program.
As of Jan. 1, holders of Eurail Selectpasses can choose the
former East Bloc country as one of their chosen three, four or five
adjoining country combinations.
Hungary -- which participates in both the Selectpass and
Eurailpass programs -- is the only other formerly Communist nation
to join the Eurail effort; however, unlike Hungary, Romania will
not be included in the classic Eurailpass program.
A sample three-country Eurail Selectpass itinerary now might
include Austria, Hungary and Romania, with prices starting at $304
per person.
Erik A. Moll, managing director of Eurail Group, said Romania
was accepted into the Selectpass program because "over the last few
years, overseas travelers have shown more interest in the eastern
part of Europe than ever before."
