Priceline Group said mobile bookings through its Booking.com division have surged more than eightfold during the past two years, as travelers have become more comfortable reserving hotel rooms via smartphones.

Booking.com generated more than $8 billion in mobile bookings last year, the company said. That was up from $3 billion in 2012 and $1 billion in 2011. Booking.com’s core markets are in Europe.

"We're seeing a shift in consumer behavior from simply booking last minute accommodations on mobile devices to planning, researching, booking and utilizing post booking functionality on our mobile platforms,” said Booking.com’s chief marketing officer, Paul Hennessy.
