Starwood Hotels & Resorts reflagged a Holiday Inn in Tallahassee, Fla., as a Four Points by Sheraton, and said the cylindrical-shaped hotel will likely be the chain’s first hotel to be added by the U.S. Green Building Council to its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program.
The 164-room hotel underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation under owner Union Hotel Co. Tallahassee.
The property was built in 1969 as one of the cylindrical hotels built for Holiday Inn known to some as “beer can” hotels. Starwood recently reflagged a “beer can” Holiday Inn in downtown San Diego as a Four Points by Sheraton.
Starwood is working with hotel owners to cut energy use with more efficient designs. The company in 2009 announced its goal to cut hotels' energy and water usage by 30% and 20%, respectively from 2008 levels by 2020.
Among the company’s LEED-certified hotels are the Ws in Hollywood, San Francisco and Austin.
