The Sheraton Macao Hotel, the largest property under the Starwood upper-upscale brand, opened its second tower this week, adding more than 2,000 rooms to the massive Las Vegas Sands development on Macau's Cotai Strip.
The 3,896-room hotel's Earth Tower, which has 2,067 rooms, brings the Cotai Strip's total to more than 9,000 rooms. The hotel also has three restaurants as well as more than 160,000 square feet of meetings space.
Las Vegas Sands last spring opened its Sands Cotai Central project, which also includes the world's largest InterContinental, Holiday Inn and Conrad properties. The Sheraton Macao Hotel's first tower opened in September.
Macau, a China-controlled group of islands about 40 miles southwest of Hong Kong, has continued to attract investment from U.S. hotel-casino operators looking to diversify their offerings beyond Las Vegas.
While visitor counts and gaming revenue rose steadily in recent years, those numbers have flattened on declining tourism numbers from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Last year, Macau's visitor arrivals stood at 28.1 million, little changed from 2011, Macau's Statistics and Census Service said in a report released last week.
Macau's gaming revenue growth last year slowed to 14%, from 42% in 2011, according to Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
