Iberia Airlines will operate a one-time roundtrip flight on Oct. 4 from New York to Vitoria-Foronda Airport near Bilbao, the gateway to Spain's Basque country along the northern coast.
The flight will return to New York on Oct. 12, following an eight-day program organized by Basque tour specialist Romotur. U.S.-based Spanish Journeys is partnering on the project to handle travel inquiries in the U.S.
"This one-time offering is a response to increasing interest among Americans in the Basque region, known for its famous foods, wines, cultural and adventure offerings, which range from the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao to surfing in San Sebastian and other areas off the beaten path," said Teresa Parker, Spanish Journeys travel specialist.
If the first flight proves popular, future flights will coincide with key events in the region, such as the Festival of San Fermin and the running of the bulls in Pamplona each July.
"At this stage, there is no plan to make this a regular year-round Iberia route," Parker said. "The aim is to set up a seasonal series of flights."
Three tours, ranging in price from $3,460 to $8,000 per person, double, will explore Bilbao, San Sebastian and the Rioja Wine Country.
Rates include roundtrip economy air, hotel, ground transportation, several meals, guided sightseeing and food and wine-focused events.
Agent commission is 10%.
