MTI Vacations loses its chance at a second coming

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. -- MTI Vacations, the resurrected Hawaii vacation packager, is out of business again after barely three months in operation.

The 30-year-old brand, which re-entered the Hawaii market in July after a five-year absence, abruptly shut down after its owner, Private Label Travel, ceased operations late last month.

Private Label Travel, which was the exclusive operator of Amtrak's private-label vacation product, Amtrak Vacations, went out of business after Amtrak canceled its 2-year-old agreement with the company.

MTI was founded in 1972 and was purchased by Global Vacation Group (GVG) in 1998.

When GVG (renamed Classic Vacation Group) sold off its divisions in late 2001 and early 2002, Private Label Travel, based here, purchased the MTI brand and its base of operations, also located here.

In late July, Private Label announced it was bringing back the MTI Vacations brand and new products for Hawaii and Mexico, MTI's major destinations in its former life.
