National Geographic and G Adventures have introduced 70 trips
that make up the new National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures product line,
with departures beginning on Jan. 5.
The two companies announced the product partnership two
months ago.
National Geographic Journeys are priced considerably lower
than National Geographic’s other tour products, such as National Geographic
Expeditions and National Geographic Adventures. Trips last from between seven
and 21 days and most are priced from $1,500 to $5,000 per person, not including
air.
Each National Geographic Journey will be led by a local guide
from G Adventures, and most groups will be limited to 16 people. All of the
tours are designed to offer hands-on exploration and encounters with locals as
well as provide travelers with free time and choices, but with the structure
and security of group travel.
A sample itinerary, “Explore Costa Rica,” is a 14-day trip
that offers access to the Monteverde Institute, a research center supported by
National Geographic. Travelers will get the chance to participate in the center’s
reforestation efforts. There will also be a visit to San Miguel de Sarapiquí on
a tour of Mi Cafecito, a G Adventures-supported coffee co-op, and a meeting
with researchers at the Sea Turtle Conservancy (co-founded by National
Geographic grantee Archie Carr) to learn about the four species of sea turtles
found in Tortuguero. The tour is priced from $2,099 per person.
The 7-day “Explore Kruger National Park,” includes a game
drive with a researcher from the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Carnivore Conservation
Program, who will share insights into the behavior of cheetahs and other
carnivores and the effort to protect them, a project led by National Geographic
grantee Kelly Marnewick that is part of National Geographic Society’s Big Cats
Initiative. The tour is priced from $1,999 per person.
“Discover Sri Lanka” is a 12-day journey where travelers
learn about Ayurvedic healing with a local practitioner; visit the CIC Seed
Farm, which works with more than 20,000 farmers in Sri Lanka to improve crop
quality; and take a Jeep ride through the Wilpattu National Park. The itinerary
is priced from $2,299 per person.
