First G2, now 1U ... another GDS wannabe

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Several airlines are testing a GDS alternative developed by ITA Software.

That's according to ITA Software CEO Jeremy Wertheimer, who said the Web-based system, called 1U, will "drastically cut segment fees" for airlines.

The new system will incorporate ITA's search technology with a booking and ticketing platform that interfaces with airline reservations systems, Wertheimer said.

Targeted at both online players and traditional agencies, 1U also will have a green-screen emulation application for agents accustomed to GDS commands, he added.

The new ITA offering comes in the wake of GDS deregulation and what is expected to be a flurry of GDS-like knockoffs, including G2 SwitchWorks, of which ITA is a search-engine vendor.
