Travel Weekly's Home-based Agent E-letter: Dec. 4, 2006

LOOKING TO EXPAND its chapters across the country, in 2007 the Outside Sales Support Network is touting its palette of Web tools that aid the organization and management of the locally run groups. At its annual conference held recently in San Jose, Calif., OSSN President Gary Fee said the network has 63 chapters and hopes to increase the number to 75 or more. Founded in 1990, OSSN is the largest trade association for home-based agents in North America, representing about 6,000 retailers.

FEE SAID THE NETWORK has "invested a tremendous amount of money in 2006 designing the chapter directors' section of Ossn.com." Using the site, he said, chapter directors can pick sponsors and topics for their local meetings, download chapter membership lists, send e-mails to those members, distribute press releases and exchange ideas on a directors-only bulletin board. More information on the network is online at www.ossn.com.

MEMBERSHIP AT the National Association of Commissioned Travel Agents, meanwhile, has doubled in the last year to 4,000 individual travel sellers, said NACTA President Joanie Ogg. The group expanded the reach of its annual national meeting, formerly the NACTA conference, to recast it as the Home-Based Agent Summit, open to all at-home retailers. The event was held in 2006 in late November in Fort Lauderdale.

DATEBOOK: The Central/South New Jersey Chapter of OSSN is planning a supplier presentation Dec. 12, 6:30 p.m. at the East Grand Buffet, East Brunswick, N.J. Participating suppliers include the Islands of the Bahamas Tourism, Luggage Free, Golf Scotland and the Travel Authority. Cost is $10, including dinner. For details, call Frank at (732) 21-1775.
