The 90-minute trek from St. Lucia's international airport to the northern coast is a literal cliffhanger. The drive is full of winding roads and steep inclines that offer glimpses into the island's mountainous interior.
But the moment I reached Cap Estate and caught sight of the crescent-shaped Cariblue Beach, my travel fatigue vanished.
I had arrived at BodyHoliday, a resort whose tagline is "Give us your body for a week, and we'll give you back your mind."
I traveled to St. Lucia to explore its wellness offerings, and what I discovered is that even after nearly four decades in operation, BodyHoliday continues to set the benchmark for the "wellness-inclusive" model.
The rhythm of renewal

I've been to many all-inclusive properties in my travels around the Caribbean, but BodyHoliday isn't your typical all-inclusive; it's more like a meticulously choreographed wellness retreat where you curate your own transformation. The resort debuted in 1988, and while the pink and coral facades of the original Caribbean architecture are a hallmark of the '80s, the interiors have undergone a modern transformation.
Many guestrooms now feature a refined nautical aesthetic, characterized by wood-look porcelain flooring, crisp linens set against tufted headboards and floor-to-ceiling drapes in soft shades of blue. My Grand Oceanfront Room was intentionally devoid of a television. Instead, the soundtrack for my stay was the rhythmic pulse of the waves just outside my balcony.

All-inclusive wellness
The BodyHoliday philosophy rests on four pillars: exercise, diet, restorative beauty and relaxation. The resort is primed for longer stays, but I still managed to reap the rewards during my long weekend. Much of the programming takes place in The Wellness Centre, which the resort refers to as its "palace-like" spa where the restorative beauty pillar comes to life.
I had prescheduled my daily 50-minute spa treatments (available excluding arrival and departure days), a standard inclusion that sets this property apart from others. On my first full morning, I enjoyed a restorative full-body massage in one of the resort's 33 treatment rooms.
During my stay, I barely scratched the surface of the services available to travelers, but there's a full menu of massages, facials, meditation, yoga and tai chi classes, all included in the stay.
Walking around the resort, there was a palpable communal energy, perhaps driven by the high return rate; many of the guests I spoke with were on their second or third visit to BodyHoliday. The beauty of the resort lies in its "choose your own adventure" aspect. You can fill your days with water aerobics, windsurfing, off-site hiking or triathlon training -- or you can be the hedonist who moves only from the lunch buffet to the massage table. I chose the latter, balancing a grueling schedule of sunbathing and long lunches at the resort's beachfront restaurant.
Fueling the soul

Dining at BodyHoliday felt like a healthy indulgence. At Cariblue Windows, the breakfast and lunch buffets were a spread of tropical fruits, locally caught fish and anti-inflammatory wellness shots. Gluten-free options were always available at the buffet, and placards touted the health benefits of each dish. The cuisine also dips into local fare. On my first night, the beach barbecue was a sensory explosion of jerk chicken and grilled fish, accompanied by the rhythms of a steel-drum band.
There are six restaurants on site, and at the restaurants I ate at -- Cariblue, Wellness Cafe and the Pavilion Grill -- plated meals were well-proportioned without feeling over-indulgent. There are also several options to upgrade your dining experience with lobster, special cuts of steak and premium wine. Room service is available, but at an additional charge.
Special programs
The resort also has a roster of programs for travelers, including a partnership with sprinter Julien Alfred, an Olympic gold medal winner and native St. Lucian. WellFit With Julien Alfred, offered from Oct. 6 to 11, enables BodyHoliday guests to participate in workout sessions, motivational talks and interactive activities with Alfred.
There are other special activities that last for a month or more. During Spring Sail (March 23 to April 10), guests can take sailing classes and sign up for timed races. In Jive June (June 1 to 27), specialized dance classes like Argentine tango and salsa are offered. September Solos (Aug. 28 to Sept. 26) is geared toward guests traveling alone by offering a weekly cocktail sunset cruise, cooking classes and dining events. And from Sept. 28 to Oct. 31, the resort transforms into a yoga retreat with limitless classes all day and a special menu of foods and teas.
The frictionless vacation
As the final day of my stay approached, I found myself reflecting on the frictionless nature of the stay.
Many of our professional lives are a relentless marathon of hundreds of tiny, high-stakes decisions, and there was relief in being able to just relax. BodyHoliday operates as a sanctuary of ease, with spa treatments already scheduled, exercise classes around the clock and nourishing, health-forward meals readily available. The resort continues to stand out among wellness resorts by offering all-encompassing wellness services that are treated as a core inclusion rather than a luxury afterthought.
