Bearing wait: Radisson cancels Mariner sailings

FORT LAUDERDALE -- Radisson Seven Seas Cruises will cancel three voyages on the Seven Seas Mariner and send the ship to drydock this month to repair the bearings in one of the pods in its Mermaid Pod Propulsion system.

Guests scheduled on the April 22, 26 and May 9 cruises will receive a full refund plus 50% off rebooked cruises departing through June. For rebooked cruises departing between July 1, 2002 and July 1, 2003, a $1,000 per person credit will be offered. A $500 per person credit will be offered to guests on the shorter April 22 sailing.

Travel agent commissions are protected, the line said.

Radisson noted that other cruise line's ships have had similar problems with pod bearings. "Ironically," the line noted, "the bearings are a relatively minor part in the advanced propulsion system that is likely to become the industry norm."
