Holland America
Line has started constructing a Base Camp complex at its McKinley Chalet Resort
near the entrance to Alaska’s Denali National Park.
The 478-room
resort along the Nenana River provides accommodations for guests on the cruise
line’s land-sea Alaska vacations.
Expected to be
completed in time for the 2016 Alaska cruise season, Base Camp will serve as a
new gathering area for shopping, dining and entertainment. The largest building
in the complex will be a 7,800-square-foot, two-story restaurant offering
mountain views. The Gold Nugget Saloon will be home to the Music of Denali
Dinner Theater, and the space will be used as a bar and music venue after the
show.
Shows, ranger
talks and demonstrations will be held on a covered stage surrounded by a
semicircle of bench seating.
Other Base Camp
features will be fire pits, three retail shops offering local goods and an
artist-in-residence cabin where local artists will display and discuss their
works.
The Base Camp
will be centrally located between the main part of the property that houses the
reception hall, dining facilities and guestrooms and the riverfront guestrooms.
