Holland America reclaims former Nieuw Amsterdam

SEATTLE -- Holland America Lines took possession of the Patriot, which the cruise company had sold to now-bankrupt American Classic Voyages in Oct. 2000.

HAL repurchased the ship at auction for $79.8 million, according to the cruise line. HAL held AMCV's mortgage on the liner.

When AMCV acquired the former Nieuw Amsterdam for approximately $114.5 million, it renamed the ship and repositioned it to Hawaii under the flag of its United States Lines subsidiary.

A HAL spokeswoman said the line has not decided what to do with the Patriot. "It might even go back to another Carnival brand," she said.
