MSC Cruises has signed a non-binding letter of intent with PortMiami to expand its previously proposed terminal development.
The scope of the original project has been expanded to ensure that the future terminal will be able to accommodate two large cruise ships simultaneously, the company said.
MSC is expected to build and operate the terminal and associated parking, which were designated in the initial plan for a site east of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.'s newly opened Terminal A.
The new agreement was signed in Geneva by Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Gimenez and MSC Group chairman Gianluigi Aponte.
MSC ships in Miami currently sail from Terminal F, which was renovated for MSC in late 2017. The new terminal is scheduled to be ready in 2022.
