Norwegian Cruise Line said it will raise its suggested daily gratuity to $12.95 from $12, effective March 1.

For guests staying in suites, who receive butler and concierge services, the daily gratuity will be raised to $14.95.

Norwegian said it last raised suggested gratuities in 2009. The charge is used to pay restaurant servers, room stewards, behind-the-scenes support staff, concierges and butlers.

Anyone already booked can prepay the gratuity by March 1 at the old rate, Norwegian said. Those planning to book by Feb. 28 can also prepay at the current rate.

As at most cruise lines, gratuities at Norwegian are added automatically to the cruise bill, but guests can opt to adjust the amount.
