TUI Cruises will name its first ship Mein Schiff, German for "my ship."

The cruise line, a joint venture between Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and German tour operator TUI AG, will launch Mein Schiff on May 15.

The German public chose the name in a contest in Bunte, a German celebrity magazine. TUI said 11,000 people sent more than 30,000 name suggestions, and that Mein Schiff was the most frequently suggested name. Mein Schiff

"The name Mein Schiff, which so many entrants decided on, completely satisfies all the criteria we set for the selection of a name," said Richard Vogel, CEO of TUI Cruises. "This name is in the German language, unique in the cruise industry and expresses our core ideas of individuality and room to move."

TUI also revealed its ship design, and described it as "terse and to the point," with a deep-blue background. The name of the ship, along with catchphrases "sound of the sea" and "calm" are written on the hull. The TUI logo is on the ship’s funnel.

The line’s first ship is the refurbished Celebrity Galaxy, which in March will undergo a $62 million conversion at Lloyd Shipyards in Bremerhaven, Germany.

The renovated ship will have a greater number of outside cabins and balcony cabins, new restaurants and an updated spa area.
