Under construction: MSC Splendida, with new name

MSC Cruises changed the name of one of its two post-Panamax ships under construction, from the MSC Serenata to the MSC Splendida, the Italian cruise line said.

According to MSC, Raphaela Aponte, who is responsible for every ship's interior design details and is the wife of Gianluigi Aponte, MSC's owner, was so enthusiastic about the designs prepared by the ship's architectural plan, the cruise line decided to change the vessel's name.

"This unique ship has many wonderful attributes, including the attention to detail, the choice of colors and perfect harmony of the spaces," said Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO for MSC Cruises, in a statement. "There will also be displays of elegant works of art on board. This ship had to be named MSC Splendida, a ship that has been created to amaze and inspire its guests."

The 133,000-ton MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia, the largest ships commissioned by MSC, are slated to join the fleet in the autumn of 2008 and the spring of 2009, respectively. MSC said that the length of each of the two ships will be six times that of the Tower of Pisa and will be almost 33 feet longer than the Eiffel Tower.
