NAPLES, Fla. -- After several delays and about $45 million in renovations, the 189-room LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort here held a soft reopening last month.

The property has 149 rooms available, with the other 40 set to open in March, according to a hotel spokeswoman.

The property, which pays 10% commission, had been closed for renovations since April.

Since then, several features have been added, including the LaPlaya Golf Club, an 18-hole, par-72 championship course. An adjoining 12,000-square-foot clubhouse will open in late 2002.

In addition, 11,500 square feet of meetings space, a 4,500-square-foot spa, a fitness center and the 234-seat Baleen restaurant and bar have opened.

The refit called for guest rooms to be separated into three sections by a 15-floor tower; a second, four-story Bay Tower; and a Beach House with eight suites.

Each guest room has a balcony with views of the gulf or Vanderbilt Bay. Rooms also have canopied iron beds, rattan chairs and full marble bathrooms.

Pampering can be found in Spa Blue, where treatments include massages, scented showers and a Japanese bath in a tub with floating rose petals.

As part of the refit, the resort installed four pools overlooking the beach, two lagoons and an outdoor whirlpool.

Recreational options include parasailing and the use of catamarans and personal watercraft.

Guests also have access to a private poolside cabana, where they can get a massage or surf the Web. The resort also offers concierge service and a business center.

Room amenities include twice-daily maid service, dual-line phones, Internet access, a private bar and a CD player.
