KRABI, Thailand -- Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide opened a 246-room resort here in February.

The hotel is the chain's sixth property in Thailand.

The Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort is located south of Phang Nga Bay in the southern part of the kingdom.

Krabi is accessible by car (it's a two-hour drive from Phuket Island), direct flights from Singapore (four times per week) and daily flights from Bangkok.

"With the property's beachfront location ... Sheraton Krabi will be one of the most popular resorts in the region for families and leisure travelers seeking a relaxing getaway," said Keith Bell, general manager of the resort.

Krabi is famous for its cliff formations, a draw for rock-climbing enthusiasts.

The province is surrounded by the Andaman Sea and features a lush forest, waterfalls and caves.

The resort is located on a secluded site on Khlong Moung Beach. Its moderate climate invites year-round visitors.

In addition to 246 guest rooms, including 30 Club Floor rooms and six executive suites, the resort has five restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, tennis, nonmotorized water sports, a retail shop, a kid's club and a swimming pool.

There is one meeting room, which measures a little more than 2,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 200 people.

Some facilities and services will not be available during the hotel's soft opening, which extends through March 31.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has 750 properties in 80 countries.
