Westin Maui to introduce beach restaurant

KAANAPALI -- The Westin Maui here is adding a new beach restaurant called Tropica, which should open in early December, and renamed two restaurants.

A room renovation project also is under way at the hotel, with some rooms set for completion by the end of the year and some by the time summer rolls around next year.

The pool area at the Westin Maui, which is spending $1.4 million on a new restaurant. The hotel's owner, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, is spending $1.4 million on the new restaurant, which will seat 200 guests indoor and out.

The Westin wants Tropica to be a hip, happening night spot, according to promotional material. The restaurant will feature a wood-burning pizza oven and offer "multinational" fire-cooked meats.

The restaurant will offer live entertainment nightly and karaoke in the adjoining Lava Lounge.

Tropica will be open for lunch seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; for snacks from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and for dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Late-night food is available up to midnight.

The Westin also changed the name of Cook's at the Beach and Garden Bar to OnO's Surf Bar & Grill and renamed the Villa Terrace the Ko'ala Tropical Barbecue and Seafood Buffet.

OnO's is near the pool and offers breakfast and lunch daily.

Ko'ala offers an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet and mixed grilled items.

In addition, the Westin Maui is refurbishing 550 rooms in the Ocean Tower with new carpet, drapes, wallpaper, bedspreads, televisions, tables, chairs, night stands and headboards.

The hotel is spending $12.6 million on the rooms, which should be finished by the end of the year.

Another 200 rooms in the Beach Tower will be finished by next summer.
