Eurail debuted its first digital pass for train travel in Italy in August.

The Italy Mobile Pass is a mobile version of the multi-country Global Pass; additional One Country Passes are set to follow later this year.

The e-pass launch marks the first time that Eurail travelers can access an all-in-one mobile pass through the Rail Planner App.

As part of the e-pass pilot launch with Trenitalia railways, Italy's primary train operator, Eurail Pass holders will be able to manage their travel from their personal devices while onboard trains across Italy.

Instead of having to manually transcribe each ride into the passbook, the information is digitized on the app, and ticket inspectors can scan a barcode to confirm pass validity.

The launch of the Italy Mobile Pass is the first step in a comprehensive digitization project across the brand's 35 participating carriers throughout Europe, with the ultimate goal being an entirely digital Global Pass.
